What Is a Beadlock Wheel?
A beadlock wheel clamps the tire bead between the wheel’s rim flange and a lock ring bolted to the outer face. This mechanical clamp stops the tire from unseating when you air down to very low pressures — the biggest risk when rock crawling or driving on sand and mud.
How Beadlock Works
Standard wheels rely on air pressure to hold the tire bead against the rim. At 8–12 PSI, sidewall flex can pop the bead off the rim. A beadlock replaces that reliance with a ring of bolts that physically pin the bead in place, so you can safely run 3–8 PSI in extreme terrain.
Inner Beadlock vs Outer Beadlock
- Outer beadlock — the lock ring is on the outside face, visible. Easier to install, common on aftermarket off-road wheels. The visible bolts also give the aggressive off-road look.
- Inner beadlock — the clamp is inside the rim barrel, invisible from outside. Cleaner look, often used on military and heavy-duty applications.
Road-Legal Considerations
On public roads, many regions require beadlock wheels to meet local equipment rules — some countries restrict beadlocks to off-road use only or require them to be DOT-approved. If your market requires certification, our off-road beadlock wheels can be supplied with the relevant documentation and load ratings.
What to Check Before Buying
- Load rating — must cover your vehicle’s axle weight, especially for pickups and 4x4s.
- Bolt pattern and bore — confirm PCD and center bore for your truck or SUV.
- Bolt torque — beadlock bolts need periodic re-torquing; check the schedule.
- Finish — off-road wheels take abuse; choose powder coat or machined finishes that resist corrosion.
