Why Import Wheels from China
China is the world’s largest manufacturer of alloy wheels. Importing directly from a factory gives you OEM-quality product at 30–50% below Western brand prices, full design customization, and the ability to build your own brand. The key is picking a manufacturer you can trust — this guide shows you exactly what to check.
Step 1: Decide Cast, Flow Formed or Forged
Before contacting factories, decide which technology fits your market. Cast wheels are best for budget entry. Flow formed offers a performance upgrade at a small premium. Forged targets premium and performance buyers. A good manufacturer produces all three and can advise on pricing tiers. (See our comparison guide: flow formed vs cast vs forged.)
Step 2: Understand OEM vs ODM
- OEM — you sell the factory’s existing designs under your brand. Cheapest, fastest (stock or short run), minimum risk.
- ODM — you customize designs: your logo, your colors, your spec matrix, or a fully new design from your sketch. Requires mold investment and 25–40 days production.
- Most importers start with OEM styles and add 2–3 ODM models once they confirm what sells.
Step 3: Confirm the Critical Specs
A wheel is not a one-size-fits-all product. For every model confirm:
- Size range — diameter, width and offset options you can offer
- Bolt patterns (PCD) — e.g. 5x112, 5x114.3, 5x120, 6x139.7
- Center bore and hub ring availability
- Load rating — confirm it covers your target vehicles
- Finishes — matte, gloss, machined, two-tone, custom colors
- Certifications — JWL, VIA, TUV reports where your market requires them
Step 4: Quality Control and Sample Order
Always order samples before a container. Ask the factory to send pictures of the actual production line and, if volume justifies it, arrange a third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas) or a factory visit. A manufacturer that opens its workshop freely is the one worth your business.
Step 5: MOQ, Payment and Lead Time
| Item | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| MOQ (cast, stock design) | 10–30 sets per model |
| MOQ (custom / ODM) | 40–100 sets per model |
| Sample lead time | 7–15 days |
| Production lead time | 20–35 days after deposit |
| Payment | 30% deposit, 70% before shipment (T/T) |
Step 6: Shipping Options
Wheels ship as FOB, CIF or DDP. Standard export packing is individual bubble wrap, edge guards and cartons or wooden crates. For small first orders, air freight or sea-air combos work well; once volume grows, a full 20ft container of wheels (roughly 300–500 sets depending on size) is the most economical.
Red Flags to Avoid
- A "factory" that cannot show its own production line or workshop photos
- Unusually low prices with no QC process or certifications to back them
- No sample policy, or refusal to confirm fitment against your vehicle list
- Vague answers on lead time, payment terms or after-sales support
